Hernan Barenboim, PhD, LMFT

Interests: Trauma, couples and family therapy, the integration of behavioral providers in primary care.


Rebecca S. Bernstein, MD, MS

Prior Experience: Primary Care Research Fellow and MCW Clinical Instructor (2012-2014), CSM Family Medicine Residency Faculty (2014-2020), Director of Community Medicine 2017-2020, co-Director of Medical Student Education Division MCW Dept of Family and Community Medicine (2019-present)

Interests: Community Medicine, oral health, evidence-based medicine, primary care research.  I enjoy teaching Community Medicine to both residents and medical students in the family medicine clerkship and the Urban and Community Health Pathways at MCW.



Laura Brusky, MD

Director of Medical Student Education

Medical Degree: University of Rome “La Sapienza”- Roma, Italy

Residency Training: ENT in Rome before moving here in 2001, then worked at MCW as Research Assistant in ENT department and Dermatology before my Residency at MCW Family Medicine Residency St. Joseph program

Prior Experience: Lakeshore since 2009 until affiliated with Aurora in 2012. Sport medicine team Doctor for Marquette University Female Lacrosse team from 2014-16.

Interests: Women’s Health, Sport’s Medicine and Medical Fields of ENT.


Beth Damitz, MD

Co-Medical Director, Director of Inpatient Medicine & Health Management Systems

Interests: Obstetrics, cosmetic procedures, minor surgery

Medical Interests: Education of family medicine residents, medical students, emergency medical service providers. Urgent care, emergency medicine, and general family medicine topics.

Laura Gottschlich, DO

Director of Sports Medicine

Medical Degree: Chicago College of  Osteopathic Medicine (Midwestern University)

Residency Training: Family Medicine Residency at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital

Prior Experience: Team Physician for professional and semi-professional, college and high school sports teams, covering physician for Milwaukee Ballet, Florentine Opera Company. Irish Dance Instructor with the Cashel Dennehy School of Irish Dance.

Interests: Sports Medicine, especially dance-related injuries, Women’s Health, Community Medicine.

Bryan Johnston, MD

Director of Global Health

Medical Degree: Medical College of Wisconsin

Residency Training: MCW/Columbia St. Mary’s Family Medicine

Prior Experience: 3 years of informal science education in urban underserved environments prior to medical school

Interests: Primary care for vulnerable populations, reducing health disparities, community medicine and community-engaged research, addiction medicine, global health, refugee care, oral health.



Denise Kohl, DO

Medical Degree: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University 

Residency Training: Family Medicine at Michigan State University-Sparrow Hospital

Prior Experience: 1-year fellowship in Street Medicine from UPMC and Pittsburgh Mercy 

Interests: Community medicine and primary care for vulnerable populations, especially the rough sleeper population. OMT, preventative medicine, and nutrition.  Working with the Street Medicine Institute and community. Teaching medical students and residents. Addiction medicine and MAT.

Linda Meurer, MD

Medical Degree: Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan

Residency Training: MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn Illinois

Prior Experience: 2-year fellowship in Academic Medicine and Clinical Investigation at the University of Minnesota, along with an MPH degree. I’ve been at MCW since 1994.

Interests: Family Medicine, Community Engagement, Health Promotion & Health Workforce Development



Jennifer Ovide, RN, BSN

Community Medicine Clinical Coordinator

Medical Degree: BSN from Marquette University (1979) – Milwaukee, WI

Residency Training: Specialized in Family Mental Health and Children’s Behavioral Medicine

Prior Experience: Many years in Health Education and Program Development

Interests: Integrative Medicine and improving the Residency experience. Guitar, singing, horses and big dogs. Married with 5 kids. I have the best job coordinating the Community Medicine experience and working with the residents in many creative programs to build a healthier community. From Minnesota but raised a Packer fan!


Michael Plotkin, DO

Medical Degree: Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine

Residency Training: I did a one year rotating osteopathic internship at Garden City Hospital – Michigan, and then completed family medicine residency at Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee

Prior Experience: Columbia St. Mary’s at the Glendale Clinic (since 2001)

Interests: Using osteopathic manipulation to treat a variety of musculoskeletal and other issues. Spending time with family, riding my motorcycle and playing tennis
